Peace Corps Commerative [Washington DC] : Transcend means “to rise above or go beyond the normal limits”, which perfectly embodies the mission, spirit, and character of the Peace Corps and each volunteer. The primary element of this concept are the dramatic Wave Beams that stretch from the NW corner to the SE, hovering over Louisiana St. These cantilevered elements are supported by the Storyboard wall, an interchangeable collection of photos and stories from actual volunteers, which highlights the importance of the individual. A World Walk parallels the Storyboard wall with engravings of countries impacted by the work of the Peace Corps. Contemporary massings of plants frame views into the site. This commemorative work will be highly visible from the adjacent fast-paced road network and will also be interesting and contemplative from the perspective of the pedestrian on foot.
