Pivot [Battery Park, New York City] : Battery Park is an iconic civic space that has withstood the test of time and change. The namesake of the park is derived from the battery artillery, a prominent military staple during the establishment and growth of the United States. Simple in form and function, the battery artillery is a piece of equipment that is meant to move. Movement in both the horizontal and vertical directions, mobility was an invaluable asset to the piece. Vertical movement was able to occur because the cannon shaft was able to pivot on an axial component affixed to the wheel base. This pivoting motion allowed quick adjustment of projected fire in an efficient manner.
